On August 29th, 2025, stakeholders from government institutions, civil society, and diverse faith communities converged at the Baobab Hotel on Friday for a roundtable discussion on “Promoting Religious Tolerance and Social Cohesion in The Gambia.”
The event, themed “The Role of Faith-Based Organizations in Promoting Healing and Reconciliation in The Gambia,” brought together leaders from Islam, Christianity, Traditional African Religions, and the Baháʼí Faith. The dialogue sought to strengthen national unity by fostering mutual respect, healing, and reconciliation beyond political and ideological divides.

Opening remarks were delivered by representatives from the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Lands, Regional Government, and Religious Affairs, setting a tone of unity and shared responsibility. The Post-TRRC Unit presented findings from the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC) on religious tolerance, while the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) shared strategies to advance respect across communities.

Civil society representatives, led by WAVE, highlighted grassroots engagement in interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence. A major highlight was the introduction of the National Interfaith Committee, whose co-chair outlined its strategic role in fostering collaboration among faith groups.
Religious leaders engaged in an interactive discussion, exchanging ideas and presenting recommendations to strengthen interfaith cooperation. The event concluded with a joint commitment to safeguarding religious harmony and building a more inclusive Gambian society.
